Can't Drag Us Away

We love all things horse. In a famous music example, horses have shown up as an emotional conduit in one of the greatest rock songs of all time. The Rolling Stone’s “Wild Horses” are an example of the strength of the image of the horse.

It is suggested that the song was composed with Keith Richard’s new son in mind, and not wanting to be away from him while they were recording and touring. Mick Jagger also contributed to the composition, and some think he was pining for a lost love.

Regardless of the back story, the image of a horse as a symbol which pulls people towards freedom and desire, is a strong one. What the lyrics say is that even with this provocative yearning for unbridled independence, it isn’t going to drag them away from what they really love. Or maybe the horses do succeed in the end.

Here are the lyrics, see what you think for yourself.

Lyrics

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can’t let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn’t drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you’ve decided to show me the same
No sweeping exit or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind
Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn’t drag me away
I know I’ve dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don’t have much time
Faith has been broken tears must be cried
Let’s do some living after we die

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses we’ll ride them some day
Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses we’ll ride them some day
